Fair Use?

Each chapter in my book starts with a quote about knitting.  Most of them are quotes that are most likely out of copyright, those rules are a little tricky.  But a couple are copyrighted.  Today I spent some time looking at the "Fair Use" law and wondering if I am looking for trouble down the road with those couple quotes.  There's some good info on Nolo about the law, but it is still a bit vague.

I could either contact those that hold the copyright and ask for permission, or find other quotes that are out of copyright.  Either way, it's a little more footwork.

This writing thing is a lot of stinkin' work.
